A few things worth knowing
Spanish mealtimes run late
If you are used to eating at 18:00 or 19:00, Spain will surprise you. Our kitchen serves at these times: Monday to Saturday: 13:30 – 16:00 and 20:30 – 22:00 · Sunday: 13:30 – 16:00. Turning up outside them usually means no hot food, here or anywhere else in the village, so it is worth planning around.
What the «rula» is
The rula is the auction house at the harbour where the day’s catch is sold, straight off the boats. It is not a tourist attraction: it is where the village’s restaurants buy. Our own boat, La Felisina, lands there, which is why our catch of the day changes with what came in.
What a «sidrería» is
Asturian cider is still and dry, and it is poured from a height into a wide glass to aerate it — you drink that small measure straight away. A sidrería is a place built around that. It is a genuinely local thing and worth trying once, though it is not what we do here: we are a seafood restaurant.
Getting here from further afield
Asturias airport is around 20 minutes by car and Oviedo about 50 minutes, both on the A-8 motorway that runs the length of the north coast. Santander, Bilbao and Madrid are all reachable by road, but they are a serious drive rather than a day trip — check the distance before planning around it.
The weather, honestly
This is the green north of Spain, not the Mediterranean. It rains, the sea is cold in August and the light is at its best in the late afternoon. Bring a jacket even in summer; you will use it.
Language
We speak Spanish and get by in English. If something on the menu is not clear, ask: the Spanish menu carries the English name of every dish underneath, and the dining-room staff would rather explain a fish than have you order one you did not want.
